| 위대한 저서의 목록 |
「서양의 위대한 저서(The Great Books of the Western World)」가 출현하게 된 것은 1947년 시카고 대학과 대영백과사전을 만드는 Encyclopedia Britannica가 공동으로 그레이트 북스 재단(Great Books Foundation)을 만들어 본격적으로 시작이 된다.
위대한 저서란 어떤 책인가? 1939년에 Scott Buchanan은 위대한 저서에 대한 5가지 기준을 제시하고 있는데 다음과 같다.
1. 가장 많은 인간이 읽은 책이다. …모든 시대를 넘어서서 어떠한 책들보다 많은 독자를 가진 책, 그리고 "시간의 시험에 합격한 책"
2. 기존의 인습적인 것과는 다르고, 독자적이며, 일관성 있는 설명을 가장 많이 하는 책....
3. 항구적이고 답을 제시할 수 없는 문제를 제기하는 책....
4. 틀림없이 예술 작품일 것....
5. 교양 과목 중에 걸작일 것.(Adler 1988, 333)
Adler도 위대한 저서들에 대해 정의를 하고 있는데 요약하면 다음과 같다.
⑴ 위대한 저서들은 무궁무진하기에 위대하다. 우리가 읽은 대부분의 책들과는 달리 위대한 저서들은 무한정으로 다시 읽을 수 있는 것들이다.
⑵ 위대한 저서들은 아동을 위한 것이 아니라 성인들을 위해 쓰여진 것이다.
⑶ 위대한 저서들은 이론적이면서 실재적인 기본 문제들을 다루며, 인류가 항상 직면하는 기본적인 문제들을 다루고 있다.(Ibid., 223)
Adler는 그의 저서 How to Read a Book에서도 위대한 저서들에 대해 정의를 하고 있다.
⑴ 위대한 저서들은 가장 폭넓게 읽힐 수 있는 책이다.
⑵ 위대한 저서들은 현학적이지 않고 대중적이다.
⑶ 위대한 저서들은 항상 현대적이다.
⑷ 위대한 저서들은 가장 읽기 쉬운 책이다.
⑸ 위대한 저서들은 가장 교훈적이며 계몽적인 책이다.
⑹ 위대한 저서들은 미해결된 채로 남아 있는 인생문제를 다룬다.(Adler 1966, 328-335)
이상과 같은 기준을 바탕으로 편집위원이 결성되고 여러 차례의 회의를 거듭한 끝에 74명의 저자와 443편의 저작들을 선정하게 된다. 이것을 54권의 전집으로 만들게 된다. 쪽수는 32,000이고, 제1권은 Hutchins가 쓴 책이고, 제2, 3권은 '위대한 아이디어(Syntopicon)'으로 명명된 아이디어 색인이 Adler의 주도로 만들어진다. 아이디어 색인이 신타피칸은 이 전집의 가치를 더해 주고 있는데 Adler가 중심이 되어 100여명의 학자들이 8년 동안 1백만 달러의 돈을 들여 이것을 만들었다. 2권으로 되어 있는 이 책은 102개의 기본적 아이디어에 대해 저자들이 어떻게 사유를 했는가를 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있고 2,987개의 논제가 색인되어 있다. 위대한 저서는 문학, 사회과학, 자연과학, 철학, 신학 분야를 망라하고 있다. 표지의 노란색은 문학작품, 파란색은 역사, 윤리, 경제, 정치, 법학, 초록색은 수학, 자연과학, 빨강은 철학, 신학을 나타낸다. 다음은 위대한 저서의 목록이다.
